Discover what to expect from the 2018 Kia Soul near Santa Fe, NM.   It only entered the U.S. market several years ago, but the Kia Soul quickly became one of the most popular vehicles in its class. Since then, the Soul has been the fastest-selling small crossover in America, and that trend is expected to continue with the upcoming 2018 Kia Soul. Because of its immense popularity, changes to the 2018 model are incremental. For instance, there are no major styling changes or engine upgrades for this year.

Slight Changes Make a Little Difference

The most apparent changes to the 2018 Kia Soul near Santa Fe NM are on the front end. The vehicle's headlight profile has undergone a slight design change, and the fog lights are a little closer to the vehicle's sides. The rear portion of the Soul's exterior has the same styling as the 2017 model.

Powertrain Options

The 2018 Soul has four available powertrain options, which are explained below.

  • The base model has a 1.6L engine mated to a six-speed auto or manual transmission. It puts out 130hp and 118 lb. ft of torque and has an EPA fuel economy rating of 25/30 city/hwy.
  • The Soul + has a 2.0L engine matched with a six-speed auto gearbox. Power is slightly higher at 161hp and 150 lb. ft. of torque and EPA rated fuel economy of 25/30.
  • The Soul ! (Exclaim) has a 1.6L turbo four-cylinder and a seven-speed, dual clutch auto transmission. It offers 201hp and 195 lb. ft. of torque and a fuel economy rating of 26/31.
  • The Soul EV has an electric motor and a single-speed automatic transmission. It puts out 109hp and 210 lb. ft. of torque, and it can go 93 miles on a single charge.

Cargo Room

Because of its boxy profile, the 2018 Soul has ample cargo space. It can hold 24.2 cu.ft. of cargo with the seats up, and 61.3 cu.ft. with seating folded down. The EV model isn't as roomy because of the electric drivetrain's components. It has 18.8 cu.ft. of cargo room with the seats up, and 49.5 cu.ft. with the seats down.

Standard Equipment and Available Options

The 2018 Kia Soul's standard features include 16" alloy wheels, cloth upholstery, a 5" display, and Bluetooth connectivity. Available options include ventilated and heated front seating, a backup camera, heated rear seating, heated steering wheel, an upgraded audio system, HID headlamps, navigation, and the UVO infotainment panel with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.

The 2018 model hasn't been rated yet, but it should have a similar rating to the 2017 Soul. NHTSA gave last year's Soul a five-star rating and, in IIHS crash testing, it received a Good score. Available safety features include lane departure and forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, and rear traffic alerts. However, the first two items are available only on the Plus trim level.

The Soul Exclaim is the top trim level and, as such, customers can expect a more refined interior. The leather- and cloth-trimmed seats look great, and the contrast serves to brighten up an otherwise dark interior. While the Soul's cabin isn't exactly luxurious, it's a well-made, great-looking interior that's a cut above most others in the segment.

Driver and Passenger Room

Backseat passenger room is a mixed bag. There's ample leg room, but taller backseat passengers may find themselves hitting their heads on the roof unless the seat back is slightly reclined. The optional panoramic moonroof makes things a bit more spacious, and it lets some good fresh air in as well. Visibility is top-notch, with the vehicle's upright styling and thin A-pillars combining to provide an excellent view. The Soul's height is a benefit as well, offering a better road view than would be available in a lower hatchback.

Our Opinion

For the 2018 model, Santa Fe Kia dealers thought that the turbo four-cylinder gave the Kia Soul a necessary boost of power for passing, accelerating, hill climbing, and lane merging. The car's interior is impressive, with ample space for cargo and passengers, and the infotainment system is one of the most user-friendly in the segment. While the Soul's boxy shape contributes to road noise, it's easy to overlook it when enjoying the comfort and sporty feel of the vehicle. The Soul EV provides quick acceleration because of the torque provided by the electric motor.

While Kia built its reputation on offering cars that were cheaper than anything else in the class, some may be surprised by the 2018 Soul's sticker price. However, times change, and the Soul and its competitors have shed the "econobox" label. We believe that the Soul offers an incredible value for the price, and we invite customers to come and see it in person.
